Ill-posedness of degenerate dispersive equations

In this article we provide numerical and analytical evidence that some degenerate dispersive partial differential equations are ill-posed. Specifically we study the K(2,2) equation $u_t = (u^2)_{xxx} + (u^2)_{x}$ and the "degenerate Airy" equation $u_t = 2 u u_{xxx}$. For K(2,2) our results are computational in nature: we conduct a series of numerical simulations which demonstrate that data which is very small in $H^2$ can be of unit size at a fixed time which is independent of the data's size. For the degenerate Airy equation, our results are fully rigorous: we prove the existence of a compactly supported self-similar solution which, when combined with certain scaling invariances, implies ill-posedness (also in $H^2$)

All the world\u27s a stage: A social media project for the American Shakespeare Center

As the nation’s only original re-creation of Shakespeare’s indoor theater, The American Shakespeare Center plays a lead role in its local area of Staunton, Virginia. The organization boasts a prominent following in the theatre and on Facebook; however, its remaining social media accounts have been stuck in the Renaissance. In November 2014, the ASC got an update in the form of a new cast member—the “What’s Your Shakespeare Personality?” quiz and web based application. Using extensive research into local demographics, audience and arts trends and social media usage, this project sought to assist the organization in the application’s launch and expanding their digital reach. A resurgence in its Twitter account, coupled with written news releases, generated buzz in several local publications and resulted in a gain of 14 new Twitter followers from November 2014 to January 2015. Now, the ASC continues to grow its social media presence and solidify its place in the digital (and theatrical) spotlight

On Unitarity Based Relations Between Various Lepton Family Violating Processes

Simple "unitarity inspired" relations between two- and three-body lepton flavor violating decays are noted and discussed. In the absence of cancellations, the existing strong bounds on $\mu \to 3e$ and $\mu\to e\gamma\gamma$ severly constrain two-body lepton flavor violating decays.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure

Brick-pits of Leicestershire

Leicester City once had thriving extractive industries within its limits, but these have changed over the years as workings have developed more within the surrounding county. The extractive industries were the quarrying of clay for brick-making, gypsum for plaster, sand and sandstone for building, as well as limestone quarries worked for lime, building stone and the manufacture of mortar. Few traces of these are visible today. The brick industry is therefore only one of many that worked the ground in the city and county. Surveys of Leicester’s industries for the British Association meetings of 1907, 1933 and 1968 (which were held in Leicester) make little mention of brick making, but there are records of much earlier production (McWhirr, 1997)

Contractors' perceptions of contractor development programmes in South Africa

Abstract: The prime objective of contractor development programmes (CDP) is to assist Small Medium and Micro Enterprises (SMMEs) to improve their management skills and performance levels to that of established firms. However literature informs that some of these programmes have not achieved their intended objectives with one of the causes of this failure being the mismatch between contractors’ expectations and what is being offered as a development programme. Contractors have highlighted some gaps in the programmes which if addressed could assist in eliminating some of their concerns
